Biologically, they are genderless, although some will choose a gender identity for themselves. They do not age, and are able to change their forms. They are functionally immortal, not needing to eat or sleep, but can be destroyed by a creature with sufficient magic. They are the only creature that are able to travel freely between Ankou and Eternity. They retain their memory entirely when they are in Eternity. As they are unable to die naturally, they travel to Eternity themselves when they tire of life on Ankou. The longer they stay in Eternity, the more their memories start to fade, until eventually they are as peaceful and blissful as any other creature there. The first spirit emerged in y5835 in Silverwood, after the reconciliation between the Gryphon Mother and the Beast. The first contact in several thousand years between two hugely magical creatures created a spark of pure magical energy that manifested itself into living beings made entirely of magic. The area would continue to spawn spirits for several thousand years. Spirits are also capable of emerging in other places with sufficiently high magical energy, such as cities or territories with a large magical population. If a creature is born in the area at the same time a spirit emerges, there is a chance the spirit will merge into the newborn creature, making them Spirited. A Spirited creature has the abilities of the spirit they are merged with, and often have aspects of their appearance, such as coloration and markings. Once the creature dies, the spirit is released, gaining a consciousness of their own for the first time. Spirits can also intentionally merge with creatures for short periods of time. This affects the creature in the same way that being Spirited would, except that the spirit retains their sense of identity, and can leave the creature at any time. Generally a close bond or a high level of trust is required for this to be possible. There are five main varieties of spirits, although there are occasionally those that do not fall neatly into a category.
