He resides in the Library, and is the Library Dragon's closest friend.

Appearance

Freckles is slightly smaller than an average cat. His fur is a warm brown, with yellow markings on his legs, ears, and tail; his face and paws are speckled. His eyes, nose, and paw pads are light gray. He has large feathered wings sprouting from just above his shoulders, in a gradient of colors ranging from white at the top to light brown at the bottom. The lower feathers are speckled with brown.

Personality

Freckles is eager, clever, and loyal. He is quick-witted and loves to tell jokes. Although he does not care much for reading books himself, he enjoys listening to stories. He is generally good-natured, and takes most things in stride, but is prone to insecurity.

History

Abandoned

Freckles was born in early Spring, y2601, in the Mother's City. His mother, Raine, was strongly anti-magic, and she was horrified when she saw that one of her children had wings. She found out that her partner Jiro had some magical ancestry, and it was passed on to Freckles. Angry that this information had been kept from her, she took her three children and left.

Although Raine loved her children, ultimately her anti-magic loyalty won over, and she decided that she would not raise the winged kitten. When Freckles was a few weeks old, on Spring 51, Raine dropped him off on the doorstep of a large building (which turned out to be The Library) in the middle of a thunderstorm, and then left the Mother's City entirely. Freckles never saw her again.

Too young to understand what had happened, Freckles lay on the doorstep in the rain, mewling pitifully. Before too long, the great doors to the Library swung open, and there stood The Library Dragon. Although the sight of a creature so much larger than him should have frightened the young kitten, he was drawn to the idea of warmth and shelter, and he wiggled his way over the doorstep and into the Library – a pleasant surprise to the Library Dragon, as previously he had been the only one able to cross the threshold.

Relationships

The Library Dragon

The Library Dragon is Freckles' closest friend and dearest companion. They are platonic soulmates, unable to imagine a world where they are not together. The Library Dragon is both a parent and a brother to Freckles. After their lifespans were magically linked, they grew even closer, with Freckles occasionally able to sense where Library Dragon is or what he's feeling.

Hyacinth

Freckles and Hyacinth did not get along at all when they met for the first time. She felt as though Library Dragon had replaced her with him, and he felt nervous that Library Dragon would abandon him and go back to her. Their interactions were full of petty squabbles and frequent snapping at each other. After Hyacinth and the Library Dragon were able to talk more, and Freckles began to feel more confident in his role in the Library Dragon's life, the hostility lessened. The two formed something almost like friendship but not quite there, and although they no longer hate each other, they can't resist playful insults when they see each other.

Raine

Freckles last saw his mother, along with his sister Storm, when he was a few weeks old, on the day she dropped him on the steps of the Library. Despite this abandonment, he feels no resentment towards her, as her actions allowed him to meet and befriend the Library Dragon. When she tried to meet him again ten years later, and he had the option to actually get to know his mother, he chose not to, believing that she forfeited the right to know him.

Puddle

Freckles has no memories of his sister Puddle as a kitten, as they were both too young when they were separated, but they reconnected on several occasions as adults. Puddle told him about what Raine was like, and all she knew about their father, which wasn't much.

Storm

Storm is Freckles' other sister, who died when she was only a few months old. As a result, Freckles does not remember her. Puddle told him about her, and how their mother let her die, which only strengthened Freckles decision to not let his mother back into his life.

Jiro

Freckles has no memories of his father, as the last time the two had any contact was when Freckles was only a few days old. He knows very little about Jiro, not even his name.
