Ankou was an empty planet full of non-sentient animals until The Gryphon Mother arrived. She gave magic and intelligence to the animals, and created magical creatures. She spent the next five centuries helping them start their own civilizations. Near the end of this era she met a fox named Kefara; the two fell in love and the Mother granted Kefara immortality. After five hundred years, the Mother disappeared, starting her cycle of reincarnation.

Meanwhile, the creatures of Ankou built their own civilizations, marking territories and appointing leaders according to their own terms. Many battles, skirmishes, uprisings, and other typical kingdom events occurred during this period. After one particular battle, which resulted in the death of King Wyrrik, Ankou was split into a planet-wide war, with magical creatures on one side and natural creatures on the other. After almost two centuries of battle, culminating in The Great Battle, peace was restored.

As this was going on, Kefara and the Mother were growing apart from each other, eventually resulting in Kefara hiding away in the wilderness and becoming known as The Beast. The rest of Ankou entered a period of peace and harmony, with cities and towns developing exponentially during this time. Among other creatures living in this time are The Library Dragon (who founded The Library), Hyacinth, Sage and the Adventurers, and Zodiac.

The next era of Ankouvian history began when the Mother and the Beast reconciled, their first touch in centuries resulting in the emergence of the first spirit. This era continued the harmoniousness of the previous one, with any last remaining territory borders dissolving. By this time, the majority of creatures are mixed-species, with at least a small amount of magic. As the cities continue to grow, technology continues to improve, working in tandem with magic, eventually resulting in the first space travel. The creatures of Ankou use this new technology to build great floating cities in orbit around the planet.

This expansion and exploration continues for several millennia until the Gryphon Mother is reborn into her True Form. She watches over her creatures, just as she did when she first arrived on the planet. After five hundred years of this, when Ankou becomes ten thousand years old, she spreads her wings over the whole planet and all the magic and magical creatures vanish, putting an end to Ankouvian history and civilization.
