They are minor shapeshifters, with the ability to switch between a water form and a land form - changing gills to lungs, and powerful tails into a pair of hind legs. Unlike other dragon species, their eggs have no hard shell, and must be incubated underwater to prevent drying out. While underwater, their voices are song-like, and can carry for miles. The First of the ocean dragons, Samaki, disappeared into the ocean off the coast of what would become the Mother's City shortly after Year Zero, with all subsequently created ocean dragons following her lead. As a result, this species was rarely seen on the surface during the first few thousand years of Ankouvian history; bones or other remains would occasionally wash up on shallow coasts, causing many mainland creatures to assume the species was extinct. Most major ocean dragon civilizations were located entirely underwater; one of the few exceptions was Larama, situated on the southernmost island in the Eastern Archipelago. Its members occasionally made contact with the residents of the islands north of them, but even then they tended to keep to themselves. During the Age of Harmony, a pair of brothers from [LOCATION] ventured up to the surface and find themselves in the Mother's City; this eventually leads the species to slowly become reacquainted with the surface world.
