After the Birdcat Revolution, which began in Zyadrin-Zeta, the tribes united into one territory ruled by an elected leader.  In the pre-Revolution era, these tribes operated under a strict hierarchy system, largely based upon the two creatures that make up each half of an individual birdcat. At the top of the hierarchy are the eagle/lion mixes, referred to as True Birdcats or simply True, who are typically the ones leading the tribes. They are always named King, regardless of gender, or Prince if they have yet to inherit their leadership position. In order to avoid confusion, when speaking with members of other tribes they are referred to with their tribe name following their title (ie King-Epsilon); when conversing amongst the other leaders, they are referred to as simply their tribe name (ie Epsilon). Despite the system of Zyadrin being so hierarchical, all twenty-four tribes are considered equal, with no one leader having more power than any of the others. It is customary for all of the leaders to convene together once per season, to check in, share news, and discuss any plans for transferring the creatures within their tribes; it is common for gryphons to be moved around by their leaders, such as for arranged partnerships (primarily in the pursuit of newly-hatched True birdcats) or to balance the populations. This system keeps the alliances between tribes and their allegiance to Zyadrin as a whole very strong, with conflicts between tribes being very rare. True birdcats are typically partnered off with other True birdcats from different tribes, in order to insure that their offspring is True as well. In the event that a tribe's King dies without offspring, the next-highest tiered gryphon (with preference given to one with eagle or lion halves) takes the mantle until a suitable replacement can be found, although they do not take the title of King.   Zyadrin birdcats typically partner with one of their own tier, which results in any offspring ending up in that same tier, but it is not uncommon for partners to be one tier away from each other. However, any more than one tier difference is taboo; if the offspring ends up with a bird half and a cat half that are more than a tier away from each other, they are immediately placed in the lowest tier, regardless of what those halves are. They also have a strict naming system, with the number of syllables in a creature's name corresponding to their tier. Tier One gryphons have five-syllable names, Tier Two have four, and so on.   This system was disrupted by the Birdcat Revolution in y1483, which was led by a Tier Five gryphon named Jai. The revolution began in Zyadrin-Zeta, when their King was replaced by an elected leader, Oska. The residents of Zeta went on to unite all the tribes into one territory, disbanding the monarchy and the hierarchy system entirely.
