They are characterized by being clear hybrids of one cat species and one bird species. They typically have no immediately usable magic, although they have the capacity to learn.   During the Age of Kingdoms, the vast majority of birdcat gryphons lived in Zyadrin. This kingdom had twenty-two individual tribes within it, but they all had the same strict hierarchy, which placed its members into one of five tiers based on their type. This system was overthrown in y1483 during the Birdcat Revolution, with all the tribes united and the monarchy replaced with an elected leader.
