Roth is a mixed-species gryphon living in the Age of Spirits. He is the eldest member of the Scribble Squad, and has been blind since hatching. He was hatched in Nordyr as the last descendent of the Thelajian Blood, but spent most of his adult life in the Mother's City.
Appearance
Roth is very large, with a broad chest and thick fur. His feathers and fur are a very light gray, near white. His beak and front talons are darker gray. He has dark gray markings along his spine, wing tips, ears, and chest. His ears are tipped with tufts of black fur. His eyes are icy blue with no pupils.
Personality
As both the eldest and the largest creature among his friends, Roth has taken it upon himself to be the caretaker of the group. His mere presence is a calming force for his companions; his deep rumbling voice mixed with his soft-spoken nature makes others inclined to trust him, and he takes the role of confidant gladly. He is generally easy-going and patient, providing the steady core of an oft-chaotic group. He does not like to discuss his parents or their ancestors, and prefers to focus on his current life, which he loves.
History
Roth hatched from his egg on Summer 16, y7409, a pure gryphon in an age where distinctions between species were becoming rarer and rarer. His parents belonged to the last remaining Thelajian Blood tribe, living on the island of Nordyr, just north of the Liwon region. Their population had been declining for centuries, between members leaving the tribe and the majority of eggs being infertile, and so this successful hatching was a cause for celebration. His parents were thrilled not only to have a new offspring in the tribe, but also to be lucky enough to be the ones to have produced it. He was given the name Rothaniax, and paraded throughout the tribe.
Though he was given an incredible amount of attention throughout his childhood, there was little-to-no real love behind it; he was beloved as an heir to the ancient Thelaji bloodline, and he was guarded fiercely, but was seen as a symbol more than a flesh-and-blood creature. He was nearly two seasons old before anyone even noticed that he was blind, and had been from the moment he emerged from his egg. From a very young age, he was made aware of his purpose, which was to carry on the legacy he was born into, and to one day bear offspring of his own that would continue that bloodline. He was introduced to another young gryphon a few years older than him, who had some mixed species in her history but was the closest thing the tribe had to an unrelated full-blooded arctic gryphon, with the intention that one day the two would be paired off and become the parents of the next generation.
As he grew older, he began to question the intentions of his family and his tribe, and to resent the way he was objectified. Any questions he had were immediately shot down, and he began to understand that his tribe - and his parents - did not care for him as an individual. He spent as much time alone as he was able to, thoughtful and pensive, tracing and retracing his steps around the island to get a sense of his surroundings without sight. He was unable to fly for most of his childhood, with his tribe not trusting him to do so safely without vision, and not wanting to risk something happening to their precious heir.
